What’s In A Name? Check out the story behind our company name, Scrimmage.
As you may, or may not have heard, 2020 is a big milestone for Scrimmage, as the company turns 10! And, yes, it’ll be a year-long 10th Anniversary celebration. To start the party, it’s interesting to take a look back at our beginnings. And, perhaps, the best place to begin is the genesis of our company name, Scrimmage - how did it actually come about? how does it apply to the learning space, or to the many aspects of our industry, as a whole?
From the beginning, the Scrimmage team were huge sports fans, especially their hometown teams, Minnesota Vikings and the Wild.
In sports, you hear the word, scrimmage, a lot. In football, it’s “the line of scrimmage.” In other team sports, from hockey, lacrosse and soccer to basketball, volleyball and softball, a team will “scrimmage,” or players will take part in a “scrimmage.” So, what does scrimmage mean? especially in these given contexts?
When I Google’d it, I came up with two definitions - two very fitting definitions.
First, "scrimmage" can mean the start of fight, or vigorous struggle - as in its derivative, a skirmish.
Also, "scrimmage" is a practice, or to engage in an unofficial, simulated game.
Then, I became curious about the (defined) purpose of a scrimmage. Here is what my Google search found on this topic:
The purpose of a scrimmage is to help players figure out what to do in specific scenarios they may encounter in a game. The focus is on thoughtful problem-solving, rather than competition.
WOW! Scrimmage really is the perfect name for our company and for our mobile learning technology.
Our platform features numerous activities that are not only fun and engaging, but also allow users (or teams) to continuously practice, to learn, to overcome any hurdles (aka struggles) and make thoughtful, informed decisions that ultimately translate into sheer confidence and preparation for real-life, on-the-job, work situations. It really is the epitome of training, just like athletes who take the field to practice day in and day out, in preparation for the big game and the relentless competition. Our application, literally at its core, is set-up to develop the employee, the person, and the team into being the best in the game of business, or whatever may be the ultimate goal - or Win.
YES! The definition, the meaning and the purpose of Scrimmage are definitely who we are as much today, as ten years ago.
