Millennial.  Gen Z.  They ARE the new generations in the workplace.  They make up the majority of employees in the workplace.  They are technology-driven.  They are driving change across companies.  In fact, they are creating a whole new culture when it comes to work, work styles and the workplace. 

So, where do learning, training and talent development fit in?  What are the tools that are most attractive? How do you make it a “pull” and a “want-to-do” vs. merely “pushing” various content and hope for engagement?  The answers are not as difficult as you might think.  And, the good news is that they want development opportunities; they want feedback and coaching; they want training.  Let’s take a quick look at some ideas.

First, current technology is a must.  These generations are mobile and attached to their devices at all times.  Their devices are also a source for many activities – social, communication, research, music/audio files, videos, games, and so forth.  Everything today is essentially done with a device.  Why not carry it over to their learning, training and development?  Mobile technology is available to support your learning initiatives.  Moreover, the Scrimmage mobile app has the ability to integrate with ALL of your existing LMSs and other applications, including SuccessFactors, ComplianceWire, and more.  So, your learners only need one application, one sign-in and one touchpoint!

Second, these generations want to be and feel connected.  They are highly social.  And, they want responses instantly.  Today, instant messaging is preferred over emails.  It is targeted, it is direct and it is more immediate.  Again, this element can be carried over to learning, training and development with numerous possibilities.  The Scrimmage social channel, for instance, can be segmented for teams, departments and so forth, as well as be a source for coaching, sharing best practices and peer learning. 

Third, gamification is a big attraction and motivator for both of these generations, especially if there are challenges, leaderboards, badges and levels involved.  Gamification engages them to get to the next level, reach for the top, earn a badge – just like today’s hottest mobile apps, Candy Crush, QuizUp and Trivia Crack on the consumer side.  Having the challenge element, for instance with Scrimmage’s RIVAL game, it connects employees and even offers employee recognition for key accomplishments.  Meanwhile, on the backend, gamification offers a wealth of data, including content usage, comprehension and mastery, among additional employee/user metrics and reporting. 

Perhaps the biggest intangibles that a mobile learning strategy offers are recruitment and retention.  These generations want technology at their fingertips for as many business functions, as possible – including training – or they will seek it elsewhere.  So, give yourself the competitive advantage, invest in the latest learning technologies.  It will pay off!
