The Beautiful Thing About Learning Is That Nobody Can Take It Away From You.

          ~  B.B. King, Legendary Musician

A Look Back At The Trends Of 2017, As We Look Forward to 2018

As we look back and assess 2017, we quickly realize the true evolutionary nature of this year, especially in our Learning, Training and Talent Development fields - including a digital revolution.  And, in full disclosure, Scrimmage played its part in innovating and bringing new capabilities and technologies to clients around the globe. Here are a few examples of the trends in 2017 that are sure to take further hold in 2018, for many reasons, on many levels.

Taking (Legacy) LMSs Mobile.

Today, L&D departments are facing a struggle (of old vs. new) that is becoming more commonplace. Companies have collected extraordinary amounts of training documents, content and information, along with experiencing exponential growth across departments, across business and product lines, as well as across the globe. Thus, multiple (separate) LMSs have literally accumulated over the years (and decades) that companies continue to rely on and utilize to this day.

However, it often means learners must access each system individually (and often via a desktop only) to locate, view and complete assignments, tasks, or to simply re-read any materials. Reporting is also independent and not streamlined, nor consolidated. Efficiencies are being lost. And, today’s mobile world, as well as the modern learner are often not in alignment with these systems. Managing and administrating the different systems also proves difficult and cumbersome, as multiple teams administer different systems. Efficiencies, completions, engagement end up at an all-time low.

Instead, Scrimmage has innovated the path to make older technologies (i.e. desktop only versions, legacy LMSs) have the functionalities and integrate with newer, cutting-edge mobile technology. Via the Scrimmage mobile learning platform, all of the content, curriculums, activities and assets currently located throughout various repositories and applications (including legacy systems) can now be integrated with one touch point for learners. In addition, reporting is integrated and combined to offer a richer story across all systems. Moreover, on the backend, one team of administrators is able to manage it. And, it doesn’t mean starting over with a new(er) LMS. More importantly, training assignments, content pieces, product information, along with a full learning history is now in one place, accessible anytime, anywhere, on any device. Engagement is back; efficiencies are restored; costs are reduced.

The Implicit – And Explicit - Need For ROI.

The pressure to show ROI may be at its greatest peak today.  As with most business functions, L&D must also show its value. Often, the “easiest” path to this end is to have a direct correlation to increased revenues following new training opportunities. However, in most cases, reporting is not that “easy,” nor streamlined. Instead, it means endless working hours of sorting through spreadsheets to make these correlations and compute any increases.

In 2017, Scrimmage innovated a new Matrix Reporting capability that resulted from an open discussion with a client. It was the wish to have reporting not only be robust, in real time, and the like, but also be correlated. By devising the matrix, the reporting uses key pieces of content that are “tagged” for effectiveness, comprehension, level of engagement, completions and then correlated to designated sales performance measurements. Further, through a color-coded system, parameters may be put in place to highlight significant performance (i.e. green background) and sub-par performance (i.e. red). Individual results are then quickly and easily viewed; team results are understood; learning modules and its effectiveness are seen.

Further, by connecting learning to performance, it also allows the learner to understand his/her own accomplishments.  It showcases best practices and uses.  And, bottom line, it enables additional resources for the learner, as well as the expansion of initiatives because ROI is clearly evident.

Gamification – It’s Okay To Have Fun Learning.

Finally!  It’s a consensus that it’s a positive for learners to have fun while they learn.

In fact, as the renowned expert in Gamification, Prof. Karl Kapp, asks in a recent interview with Scrimmage, “why does training have to ‘boring?’  Why can’t game elements and elements of interactivity be added to increase engagement and allow the learner to have a little more fun, as well?”

Gamification, or game-based learning, is engaging, offers immediate feedback, as well as instills a feeling of accomplishment by overcoming a challenge. And, it can be a fun way to learn for key subsets of learners, as we all have our learning preferences.  Further, there are different elements from badges and leaderboards to surveys and tests that can be integrated into gamification and only enhance the experience further.  #LearnWhenYouPlay

LEARN MORE!  HOW THE SCRIMMAGE SOCIAL PLATFORM SUPPORTS LEARNING + CLIENT TESTIMONIALS:

Active, social learning among communities, or teams has long been a vehicle by educators and academics to encourage knowledge. When it is social, knowledge becomes active, which encourages retention.

With Scrimmage’s social learning solution, colleagues are able to discuss content, share best practices, answer questions that are top-of-mind and have a real-time interaction about key topics. Or, managers can facilitate learning with their team, by offering real-time coaching moments for added impact.

On the backend for administrators, our social channel supports both static and dynamic content, including images and videos.  Our social channel is also enrollment based and can be configured to specific groups (or sub-groups), along with the ability to turn it on/off at any point, allowing the feature to be used for a specific meeting/event.  Controls, disclaimers, moderators, and other parameters are easily put in place to mitigate risks.  Further, administrators have the ability to edit or remove posts. And, designated groups may be moderated, or not, to maintain compliance.

The Scrimmage mobile platform fostered a new sense of community among trainers to easily share ideas and communicate best practices.
